French Property Insurance
Insurance requirements in France are different to the UK:
- The law demands that every property is covered by third party insurance (civil propriete). If your property is to be built the premium must be paid before work on the site begins.
- French mortgage lenders (unlike their UK equivalents) do not insist that you take out buildings insurance. However, it is strongly recommended that you do. This can be arranged separately or included in a comprehensive (multirisque) policy that also covers your possessions. UK insurers generally offer the most complete and competitive policies.
- If you live in a block of flats the civil propriete and the buildings policies will be paid communally. Check your lease or the terms of the sale agreement. In communal (Co-owned) property you always have adequate cover for your possessions.
- If you let out your property, or allow someone to live in it, the tenant should indemnify you against the risk of fire. He is also responsible for insuring his own possessions.
