Writing for Children - What's Hot & What's Not

There is a constant change in the popularity of certain types of books - it is as changeable as the latest fashions in the clothes world. What happens is that a particular book or series becomes a best-seller, and aspiring writers jump on that bandwagon. A few years ago, publishers were clamouring for reality - what they called 'slice of life' books. Then, because the Harry Potter books and Philip Pulman's His Dark Materials series were so successful, everyone decided fantasy was the new big thing.

Picture Books

Picture books are hard to place unless they are very striking and can be published in other languages besides English. At the moment, publishers are not taking on many new picture book writers, although an exceptional script will always find a home.

Fairy Tales

Publishers tend to commission well-known authors to retell the traditional tales and are unlikely to take this type of story from a newcomer, but there is a market for well thought out new fairy tales that capture the interest of today's children.

Fantasy Worlds

At the moment editors feel there is too much fantasy struggling for a place in the market, so if you do write fantasy make sure it is different and has something fresh and unusual to offer.

Science Fiction

Stories set in the future with interesting technology and adventures in space are popular - particularly with boys. Most children's publishers have sci-fi series and one-offs. Check their catalogues and websites, and consult the current Children's Writers' and Artists' Yearbook.

Historical Novels

A few years ago, historical novels were almost impossible to sell, but now well-written, accurately researched historical novels are sought after by publishers, especially if they fit in with the eras and subjects being studied in the various Key Stages of the National Curriculum. If your story fits into the requirements of the curriculum or feeds into a current interest, it will be easier to sell.
