Avoiding Travel Sickness
You may get more serious illnesses while abroad but they will probably not feel worse than with seasickness: to some people jumping overboard would be a pleasant alternative. (This type of sickness can also occur in cars and planes - in fact almost any form of transport.) You can try to prevent it by:
- Remaining amidships as much as possible.
- Lying down and keeping your head still.
- Not looking at the sea - if possible keep your vision fixed on the horizon.
- Avoiding fatty foods and excessive alcohol before you travel.
If all else fails turn to the medicine cabinet. The following have shown to be effective, particularly if taken at least an hour before travel:
- Cyclizine - Marzine.
- Diphenhydramine - Dramamine.
- Meclozine - Bonamine, Postafine, Sealegs.
- Promethazine - Avomine, Phenergan.
If you suffer badly from seasickness, consult your GP before you travel.
