Travel Health Advice

Being ill at home is bad enough but it can be a misery if you are travelling. There are a daunting number of weird and not-so-wonderful diseases around the world and in light of this it is sometimes surprising that we go travelling at all. However, many of these illnesses can be guarded against and others can be avoided with a little luck and some careful planning. Being aware of what could happen to you is half the battle of avoiding it.

Ten Golden Rules for Staying Healthy Abroad

  1. Get all relevant vaccinations before you go.
  2. Take time to acclimatise properly.
  3. Boil all drinking water and milk.
  4. Do not eat uncooked or under-cooked meat or fish.
  5. Avoid fly-infested restaurants if possible.
  6. Do not have sex with prostitutes or inject drugs with contaminated needles.
  7. Find out your anti-malarial requirements and take your pills as directed.
  8. Wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing in cold climate and avoid being in wet clothing for prolonged periods.
  9. Only go swimming in bilharzia-free areas.
