Finding the right Marriage Bureaux
Marriage bureaux differ from other agencies in that their primary aim is to help clients find marriage partners. In this regard, they are unlike introduction services which simply introduce people seeking friends or temporary relationships. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) suggests that before any fees are paid or any binding commitment entered into, a prospective client of a marriage bureau should be given a clear and simple written description of the service offered and the fees charged.
According to OFT guidelines, marriage bureaux should:
- State whether or not membership is restricted to those currently unmarried. If, restricted,
- Ask applicants to provide a signed statement that they are legally free to marry
- Tell clients of the criteria used for matching and whether stated preferences are strictly kept or treated only as general indicators
- Upon request give an indication of the likely number of introductions the bureau may be able to offer during the membership period, allowing for the particular circumstances and stated preferences of the client
- Clearly state the fees to be charged, including any additional charges for interviews, further introductions, etc. or marriage
- Offer clients the choice of a proportional refund or an extension of membership if the level of service initially indicated cannot be given.
