Scottish Genealogy
In Scotland the civil registration of births, deaths and marriages began in 1855 - later than in England.
The records, along with many parish registers, are held by the Registrar General in Edinburgh and can be searched for a fee. The indices can also be searched by computer at the FRC (Scottish Link) for an hourly fee, or also for a charge on the web. This gives access to all births, marriages and deaths records since 1855, plus adoptions and divorces and indices to censuses for 1881 and 1891.
Also computerised are the Scottish Church registers of births, baptisms and marriages from 1555 to 1854. The Society of Genealogists has an extensive range of Scottish records. As with Welsh archives, army searches are made easy because of the territorial basis of regiments. Go to the PRO website for details of the many Scottish records they hold, and check out scotsorigin.net.
