Teaching Jobs Abroad

There are opportunities for teachers, lecturers, and training personnel all over the world, and though there are some posts that offer security of tenure, most of the joibs are on contract. There are four main categories:

• EFL teachers (teachers of English as a foreign language). There are opportunities in virtually every country of the world (including Eastern Europe) in both the public and private sectors and at all levels from primary to post-graduate level. Positions are advertised mainly in the Times Educational Supplement , the Education Guardian, EL Gazette, Opportunities Abroad , (WSE) and on the website www.tefl.net.
• Teachers of other subjects. Opportunities occur particularly in the international school sector, mission schools, in bi-lingual schools in the Middle East and elsewhere, and in service schools. Positions are advertised in the Times Educational Supplement, the Education Guardian, in teaching union journals and sometimes in church newspapers and magazines (e.g. Church Times).
• University and college lecturers. Positions are advertised in the Times Higher Education Supplement, the Education Guardian and in specialist journals. The Association of Commonwealth Universities (36 Gordon Square , London WC1H 0PF) assists its members with the recruitment of staff by advertising positions and circulating details of them to univertisites, but is not equipped to deal with speculative applications. Some embassies and high commissions recruit teaching staff on behalf of their governments.
• Training staff. Positions are advertised mainly in the relevant professional and trade journals. Among the organisations recruiting personnel of thois nature are volunteer and missionary organisations, petroleum, construction and hospital operating firms in the Middle East.
