Online Bank Accounts

Online Bank Accounts

All the major UK banks offer Internet banking services so you can manage your account remotely, from wherever you are. However, there are also a number of banks that just operate an online service and consequently do not have a high street presence. These include: Egg; Smile and One account, among others. They are usually all subsidiaries of the leading financial banking providers listed above but operate as separate businesses. Opening an account with one of these Internet banks still requires proof of identity, but as they have no high-street presence, proof (originals only) has to be sent by post.

You will then have to wait until they have conducted their checks before your account is open and fully functional. Documents will then be returned to you by post.

Banking Practice

Most banks and require you to operate your bank account for a period until they will provide/offer you with additional services. This gives them a chance to see your salary being paid in and your bills being paid out. They will also check that you will be using your debit card for cash withdrawals and payments responsibly. Depending on which bank you open your account with, the time will vary on how long before you can ask for an overdraft facility, a more complex bank account or a credit card.
