London Taxi

London Taxis and Minicabs

London taxis or black cabs can be hailed in the street if they have a yellow 'For Hire' sign illuminated, or located on designated ranks, which are situated at prominent places, including many mainline rail, underground and bus stations. They are wheelchair accessible and most have a variety of additional aids for disabled customers.

The fares charged are regulated, and are clearly shown on a meter in the cab. And with safety paramount, all taxi vehicles and drivers must meet minimum standards (for drivers this includes passing the world renowned 'Knowledge of London' examinations).

Licensed vehicles are subject to regular checks by the Public Carriage Office.

Taxis outside London

Taxis outside London operate in much the same way: the vehicles and drivers are also licensed. Occasionally a traditional taxi can be found but they are more likely to be saloon cars. However, they will still have the illuminated 'For Hire' sign.

Private hire vehicles (minicabs)

The essential difference between taxis and private hire is that private hire journeys must be pre-booked through a licensed operator. Private hire vehicles cannot ply for hire in the street. So you can hire a minicab in person from minicab offices or book by telephoning a local minicab office (telephone numbers can be found in the Yellow Pages telephone directory or at www.yell.co.uk. All minicab operators must hold an operating licence issued by the Public Carriage Office. Minicabs do not have a meter so it is advisable to agree a fare before starting your journey. It's inadvisable to accept an offer from drivers touting for business on the street; this is against the law.
