Banking
Retail banking is very similar to that operated in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, with similar products and services being offered. In the UK the main high-street banks include HSBC, Barclays, NatWest, HBoS, RBS and LloydsTSB. Typically roles include:
- front office
- accounting and reporting
- managerial positions
- compliance functions
- reconciliations
- call centre staff.
To work in this sector, experience is important. Although the laws, regulations and operations in the UK retail banking may differ from those you have experience of, the banks offer very strong in-house training programmes to bring you up to speed.
Typical working hours: 40-50 hours per week
Typical rates of pay: £8-£15+ per hour depending on position and seniority
Accounting
London is one of the major finance capitals of the world, so there are plenty of opportunities for accountants and other financial-based staff. Temporary work in this sector is as diverse as the range of permanent opportunities available and therefore typically includes:
- financial control and direction
- management accounting and financial planning
- regulatory - GAAP, IAS, Sarbannes Oxley
- systems implementation and project management
- financial and business analysis and modelling
- payroll and credit control.
To work in this sector you will need relevant qualifications, and previous experience is essential to secure a good position. Computer literacy is essential - especially Excel. Word and Access experience would also open doors to a wider number of project type roles.
Typical working hours: 40-60 hours per week
Typical part qualified accountant: £10+ per hour
Typical qualified accountant with experience: £20-£35 + per hour
