Currency in the UK

The UK has a decimal-based currency known as sterling, or more commonly known as pounds. 100 pence equals £1 (one pound sterling).

A variety of coinage and notes are available as are detailed below. The UK has not converted to the euro. However, when travelling to many of the other main European countries, e.g., France, Spain, Italy, Greece, you should be aware that they all use the single euro currency.

UK Coins

1 penny = 1p (smallest copper-coloured coin)
2 pence = 2p (copper coloured)
5 pence = 5p (smallest silver coin)
10 pence = l0p (silver coin)
20 pence = 20p (silver coin)
50 pence = 50p (largest silver coin)
£1 = 100 p (gold coloured)
£2 = 200p (largest gold coloured)

UK Banknotes

£5 = 500p Blue/green
£10 = lOOOp Brown
£20 = 2000p Purple
