Driving and Car Hire in Greece

Generally speaking, the further south in Europe you drive the more unpredictable the driving becomes - especially in Italy. Greek drivers, whilst not being the best in Europe, are certainly a lot better than some of their European counterparts. However, be warned, Greece has the highest accident rate in Europe, just pipping Portugal. You will encounter many variations of bad habits, including driving across the road to overtake on the wrong side, hooting at traffic signals when the lights are on red and even driving through red traffic lights. Don't forget though, the horn is used to indicate the presence of another car, not necessarily that something's wrong. Keep your eyes open as you drive along the mountain or coastal roads in particular for the small roadside shrines, which usually indicate the scene of a fatal accident in the past. Sometimes the shrines are adorned by flowers or kept simple with a single light burning and a photograph.

Renting a Car

Car rental in Greece is probably the most expensive in Europe. You should expect to pay a minimum of between €250 and €350 per week for a fairly modest car for two adults and perhaps two children. You can hire on the basis of either unlimited or fixed mileage. Extras such as insurance and tax will be added on. If you intend to enter a long-term hire agreement, it may be better to consider hiring the car from the UK before your arrival. Most of the leading car hire agencies have representatives in Athens.

If you have an accident it is likely that the car hire agency will not collect or lend you another vehicle. You may have to wait for two or three days for a representative to visit and assess the situation.

Signing the papers

All car hire agencies will demand either a credit card or substantial cash deposit in advance. The minimum age to hire ranges from 21 to 25. You should also produce an international driver's licence and ensure that the car has breakdown insurance with the Greek Automobile Association (ELPA). Some car rental companies have an agreement with ELPA's competitors, Hellas Service or Express Service, but they are prohibitively expensive to call out. The cost can be around €125 to enrol you on the spot.

Reading the small print

Be wary, in many cases initial rental prices quoted may not include tax, collision damage waiver fees and personal insurance. The coverage included by Greek law in the basic rental fee is generally inadequate. Check the fine print on your contract.
