Rental Accommodation in Greece
As soon as you are settled in Greece and get to understand the area that you are proposing to live and work in, the best way to find semi-permanent accommodation is:
- At a periptero - there is now a newspaper specifically for renting apartments and houses.
- By word of mouth in local bars, kafenio, etc.
- By keeping your eyes open in the local newspapers.
- By paying a visit to the local tourist office (touristiko grafio).
- By visiting a real estate agency, although most are concerned with sales and purchase only.
- By walk the area looking for 'to let' (enikiazete) signs on doors.
Considering Apartments
Both furnished and unfurnished accommodation is available. Property to rent is advertised in the newspaper under the heading 'enikiassis akiniton'. The usual deposit needed for rented accommodation is equivalent to two months' rent. Rental contracts are usually for two years, and sometimes even longer.
There is always a considerable number of apartments scattered around popular tourist locations. Many are in the hands of letting agencies who place them with tour operators. One method of searching them out is to read through the holiday brochures of companies that specialise in this type of accommodation. Many of these villas are often not in use until late May or early June, so it is possible to come to a private arrangement usually at very attractive rates.
