Finding a Job in Canada

You should start your search before you even leave your home country, even if it's just to get an idea of what's out there. For example, British newspapers sometimes carry Canadian job advertisements. You can also check relevant trade journals or order specialist publications from Canada.

These include:

Human Resources Centres of Canada (HRCC) specialise in helping people find jobs. The phone book will tell you where the nearest centre is to you. There are general postings on bulletin boards at the centres as well as counsellors who can help you.

Contacting an employment agency or head hunter, either in your home country or in Canada, is another starting point. Almost all Canadian newspapers are on the World Wide Web and you can try searching their classifieds. Be aware, however, that many employers who advertise in papers and through agencies are looking for immediate help.

Another tactic is to call companies that are in your specific field of work, even if they're not advertising. This is especially useful for the trades who are always looking for people and often don't bother advertising because if they always advertised when they needed someone, they'd have a permanent ad in the paper. For non-trades professions, most companies have specific human resources departments that can tell you if there are any openings.
