Moving to Australia
So you've done the research, discovered you are eligible for a visa and reached the monumental decision to move to Australia. What now?
Seeking Professional Help
Australia's migration rules are complex and can be subject to frequent change. Therefore, potential migrants may choose to seek the assistance of a migration agent who can help assess the chances of success. In theory, they also should be able to ensure that the whole process is more efficient and faster than going it alone.
A migration agent can advise you precisely which visa is right for you and your circumstances. This is crucial as an application can only be considered under the visa type you selected and, if this turns out not to be the correct one for you, it will be declined and you will need to apply again - wasting both time and money. However, it is worth noting that if you have carried out your research thoroughly ahead of your visa application, there is no reason for you to get this wrong.
A Word of Warning
Whilst using an agent can help the process, migration agents cannot influence the outcome of your application. The decision on your application will depend solely on whether all of the relevant documentation and information has been provided within the set time limits, and on your application meeting the criteria for the specific visa applied for.
How to Choose an Agent
There are many agents advertising their services on the web and in print so choosing one can be confusing. If you decide to go down this route then look out for the following.
Registration
If you are using an Australian based agent, they must be registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority. This is a protection for consumers as those agents who are found to be dishonest or incompetent can be punished and prevented from further practice.
Shop Around
Take time to compare agents and what services they are offering; so that you find one that is right for your personal needs. Remember all cases are different so confirm that they have experience in your field. Do ensure that they provide you with information about all the fees ahead of making any commitment, and get this in writing. Also, do not be afraid to ask about their success rate. If they are a reputable company they should not be afraid of telling you how good they are.

If you have Children
Moving is a stressful experience for all concerned and emotions can run high - especially if you are moving your entire family. Therefore, make sure your children are prepared as far ahead as possible for the move.
Customs
Australia has very strict customs which must be adhered to. Failure to do so may lead to your belongings being impounded. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are aware of current customs regulations and how they may affect you. Removal Companies
Unless you are starting your trip to Australia as backpackers, you are likely to have excess baggage or belongings that you will need to send separately. Most people do this ahead of departure so it is at least en route when you arrive. You can send your belongings via ship or air. Shipping is often the cheaper option as it takes longer and you purchase crate space which can be shared with others. Sending items by air is of course a faster option but can be expensive as freight companies usually charge by weight. You need to work out what you want to send and how you want to send it before contacting removal companies. It is advisable to contact two or three reputable companies to get a quote. Be sure to ask how long it will take, including customs, processing on arrival in Australia and whether your items will be insured.

Brit Tips
- Make a comprehensive list of what you have packed in each box and number them accordingly. This will help in the event of any customs issues.
- If you use a removal company, you can save yourself money by purchasing your own boxes and packing items yourself - however, do make sure you follow their guidelines.
- Take the least amount you can with you as goods are not expensive in Australia and your old belongings may not suit your new lifestyle.
- If avoidable, do not take British electrics as Australian plugs are different from ours and you will need lots of adaptors or pay for plugs to be changed.
