Internal Flights & Train Travel in Australia

Internal Flights

Air transport is provided in Australia by the two International Airlines, Qantas and Virgin Blue, who offer a similar service of internal flights on domestic networks, alongside other, smaller feeder airlines. As Australia is such a vast and empty country the only practical way to tackle long distances and extensive travel is by air. There is a range of discount fares available for international travellers - provided you book these before you leave your home country. Every town and city has an airfield, as do many individual properties in the country, while most business travel is done by air.

Train Travel in Australia

Trains run from one end of the nation to the other in a vast railway network, although not as comprehensive as some of the railway systems operating overseas. Modern air-conditioned trains operate on the outback and coastal routes. The main lines follow the east and south coast, linking the cities of Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Lines from Adelaide connect into the line between Sydney and Perth. If you plan to do a lot of travel by train initially, you are entitled to an 'Austrailpass'. This pass can only be purchased overseas by the holder of a foreign passport and allows unlimited travel in first or economy class on interstate or metropolitan trains nation-wide.
